Manufacturing Process
Sulphur Combustion
Elemental sulphur is melted, filtered, and burned in dry air at 1000-1200°C to produce sulphur dioxide (SO₂)
Catalytic Oxidation
The SO₂ gas is passed over vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) catalyst beds at 420-450°C in a multi-pass converter. SO₂ is oxidised to SO₃ with 99.5%+ conversion efficiency
Gas Cooling
The SO₃ gas is cooled through a series of heat exchangers, generating high-pressure steam which is recovered for power generation
Absorption
The cooled SO₃ gas is passed through a packed absorption tower where it is absorbed in recirculating 98-99% sulphuric acid. The absorption heat is removed by external coolers
Oleum Production (Optional)
For oleum (fuming sulphuric acid), SO₃ is absorbed directly into sulphuric acid to achieve the desired free SO₃ content
Concentration Adjustment
The product acid is diluted or concentrated to the target strength (typically 98% w/w) by controlled water addition or blending
QC Testing
Each batch is tested for assay (titration), specific gravity, iron content, heavy metals, chloride, and colour
Storage & Dispatch
Stored in stainless-steel or lined carbon steel tanks. Dispatched in dedicated tankers, stainless-steel IBCs, or HDPE drums
