Manufacturing Process
Feedstock Preparation
Natural gas (methane) is desulphurised and steam reformed at 800-950°C to produce synthesis gas (syngas) — a mixture of CO and H₂
Compression
The syngas is compressed to 50-100 bar and fed to the methanol synthesis reactor
Catalytic Synthesis
The syngas reacts over a copper-zinc-alumina catalyst at 220-270°C to form methanol. The reaction is highly exothermic and heat is recovered for steam generation
Condensation
The reactor effluent is cooled and crude methanol is condensed. Unreacted syngas is recycled to the reactor
Distillation
Crude methanol is distilled in a two-column system. Light ends (dimethyl ether, methyl formate) are removed in the first column. The methanol product is taken from the second column
Dehydration
The distilled methanol is passed through molecular sieves or a third column to achieve the target water content (<0.1%)
QC Testing
Each batch is tested for purity (GC), water content (KFT), specific gravity, distillation range, acidity, and permanganate fading time
Storage & Dispatch
Methanol is stored in dedicated stainless-steel or mild steel tanks with nitrogen blanketing. Dispatched in tankers, IBCs, or drums as required
