Manufacturing Process
Feedstock Preparation
Cumene (isopropylbenzene) is produced by alkylation of benzene with propylene. High-purity cumene is fed to the oxidation reactor
Cumene Oxidation
Cumene is oxidised with air at 90-130°C in the presence of an initiator to form cumene hydroperoxide (CHP)
Acid Cleavage
CHP is cleaved with dilute sulphuric acid at 60-80°C to produce phenol and acetone in the Hock process
Neutralisation
The cleavage mixture is neutralised with caustic soda and cooled. The organic and aqueous phases are separated
Distillation
Acetone is separated from the reaction mixture by fractional distillation. The crude acetone is collected at 56-57°C
Purification
The crude acetone is redistilled through a polishing column to remove trace impurities and achieve 99.5%+ purity
QC Testing
Each batch is tested for purity (GC), specific gravity, water content (KFT), acidity, and permanganate fading time
Packaging
Acetone is filled into HDPE drums, IBCs, or tankers with nitrogen blanketing to prevent moisture absorption
