Vetiver oil — known in India as khus oil — is one of the most important base notes in the perfumer's palette, and sourcing it well requires a level of attention that many buyers underestimate until they have had their first experience with poor-quality material. The oil is extracted from the dried roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides, and the quality is heavily influenced by root maturity (typically 18–24 months in the ground), distillation duration, and post-distillation ageing. A vetiver oil that has been distilled from young roots or rushed through processing will lack the depth, earthiness, and complexity that makes this ingredient so valued in luxury fragrance.
Indian vetiver — cultivated primarily in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — has a character that is distinctly different from its Haitian or Javanese counterparts. It tends to be earthier, woodier, and more complex. Perfumers who work with it regularly describe it as having a drydown that is simply irreplaceable in certain oriental, woody, and chypre compositions. That character comes from the soil, the climate, and decades of accumulated agricultural knowledge. It cannot be replicated synthetically with any precision, which is why natural vetiver oil commands a significant premium in the global fragrance market.

A Note on Handling Vetiver Oil
Vetiver oil is significantly more viscous than most essential oils, particularly in temperatures below 20°C. In colder climates, or during winter shipping, the oil may thicken considerably and can be difficult to pour directly from the drum. Gentle warming of the container in a water bath (not exceeding 40°C) will restore normal viscosity without damaging the oil. This is a standard handling consideration for vetiver globally and is not an indication of product defect. We advise all buyers to include this note in their internal handling procedures.
